ICT and cyber security

The ICT and Cybersecurity sectors emerging from the trend of digitalization, are some of the most rapidly growing areas of business in Jyväskylä. The excellence of the companies in this field is focused on e-business, mobile and security technology, and on solutions for the IoT environment.

There are currently about 500 companies in the region, employing around 6000 people. The combined annual volume of business is approximately €1b.

Jyväskylä is also home to a significant cluster of public ICT. The ICT service centre of the Social Insurance Institution of Finland Kela, the main office of the Government ICT Centre Valtori and the Finnish Defence Forces C5 Agency are all located in the city. The scope of these authority activities has brought Jyväskylä not only jobs, but also active cooperation, new business and new start-ups.

The University of Jyväskylä and the JAMK University of Applied Sciences play a central role in developing the know-how in information technology and cybersecurity. As a pioneer in the field, Jyväskylä has in recent years strongly profiled itself as a test environment for new digital services, experiments and pilot projects, in both public and private sector organizations.

ICT and Cybersecurity are in many ways linked to the surrounding society and other areas of our region, such as well-being and renewable industry. Digitalisation is also one of the most important ways of producing sustainable development.

Growing: The gaming industry and wellbeing ICT

Jyväskylä is characterized by a close and productive cooperation between research organizations and companies. Egaming and esports already generate growth in the region from the multidisciplinary research and business point of view. About 10% of the Finnish gaming companies are locted in Jyväskylä.
ICT solutions aimed at improving wellbeing, are also becoming increasingly prominent for the local business activity. These solutions are often the result of the region's solid research and educational expertise, represented, for example, by the only Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences in Finland.

Research and education

ICT and cybersecurity can be studied at the Faculty of Information Technology at the University of Jyväskylä and JAMK University of Applied Sciences. Both offer a wide variety of options for students in the field.

University of Jyväskylä and JAMK are both active in interdisciplinary research, which emphasizes applied digitalisation. This takes the focus from mere technology to human-service interaction, the usability of mobile services, data security, simulation research and the integration of computational sciences with information technology (e.g. machine vision solutions).

Jyväskylä has global excellence in identifying, preventing, and recovering from cyber-attacks.

The JYVSECTEC, a specialist JAMK training centre on cybersecurity research and related services, has set up the FINCSC certificate that companies can use to secure their data and to ensure the continuity of their business operations. JYVSECTEC also houses a development environment called the Real Global Cyber Environment (RGCE), in which organizations can train and develop their own cybersecurity readiness.

Security technology applications are naturally utilized by the public sector, but increasingly companies are also using them to develop the security of their own operations as well as their products and services.
